Sometimes, the sun gets too much and for many of us London-based members, the consistent heatwaves are taking their toll. So we are drawing the curtains, turning up the aircon and settling onto the sofa for some film escapism. Here are some of our favourites:
The Escapist Selection
The ultimate summer film, directed by our beloved Nancy Meyers
A classic childhood one to revisit. Still a timeless and enjoyable film. “Everybody Wants To Be a Cat” still slaps.
Fans of the new Amazon Prime series, Sterling Point, must check out her 2024 film, My Old Ass. Also set in the Muskoka lakes area of Canada, with a wonderfully realistic script and performances. An ideal 90 mins.
One of the most beautiful animations.

A heartening tale of the bond between siblings as told through the history of their childhood home. As Patchett is set to release a new novel this year, we want to revisit her back catalogue, including Tom Lake.

After of the release of the Ryan Gosling led film, we are revisiting a read of Andy Weir’s sci-fo novel. Not usually a favourite genre of ours, however this is extremely readable and fun.
The Magican’s Nephew
C.S. Lewis
If it’s good enough for Greta, it’s good enough for us. We are revisiting the first in the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe series by C.S. Lewis, to get an idea of what is to come in the Gerwig-directed Netflix film.
Go Gentle
Maria Semple
Released in April, Go Gentle is a twisty and witty romance novel from the author of ‘Where’d You Go, Bernadette.’
